Day School for Girls aged 3 to 18, Boarding from 11 to 18, 400+ pupils, County of Sussex
About the School Open sea, a dramatic sky and the distant horizon: Roedean’s ethos comes from its stunning location overlooking the English Channel. Despite having achieved the best A Level results for five years in 2009, Roedean is not driven by a one-dimensional hunt for academic glory. Instead, Roedean believes that the job of great independent schools is to develop the spirit, values and individual personalities of the students. Roedean is a boarding school in England with a global outlook. On their first day at Roedean, girls might only gaze towards France; but by their last day they will be ready to step confidently into a global community and career. International students make up 45% of Roedean community, with girls coming from over 30 countries, notably Nigeria, Hong Kong, China, Canada, USA and Russia. Roedean welcomes international students because the school attributes two key Roedean characteristics - open-mindedness and individuality – to the diverse student mix. However, studying in a UK independent school in another language can be tiring and sometimes challenging. Roedean has an excellent English as an Additional Language (EAL) department to give tailored support to any girls who would like it. These lessons are given on a one to one basis, outside the main timetabled lessons.
Admissions Admission to Y9 (13+) – Common Entrance exam is typical, but Roedean’s own independent, school entrance exam is also widely used. Admission to Y12 (16+) - entry is to the 6th form is competitive. This is particularly true of the specialist 6th form subjects of economics, government and politics, history of art & psychology. Unless there are special circumstances, school administration normally expect all applicants, including those living overseas, to visit Roedean as part of the admissions process.
