Bedford School (IB) – Boarding & day school for boys aged 11 – 18, pupils, county of Bedfordshire
About the School A renowned boarding and day school for boys, Bedford School is situated on an extensive parkland estate at the centre of the county town of Bedford, some 50 miles north of London. The original school was officially founded in 1552 but although Bedford proudly celebrates its heritage and strong traditional roots, the focus is firmly on the future.
This philosophy is underlined by substantial heavy and continuous investment in all areas of school life, a practice that has enabled the provision of superb facilities with recent additions including Observatory and Planetarium, a Library and a new Music School, as well as sustaining the Schools’ unwavering commitment to new technologies.
Academic Academic excellence is the Schools’ primary objective and Bedford’s impressive reputation is demonstrated each year by a GCSE pass rate (grade A-C) that consistently achieves almost 100%, with more than 60% at A or A*
Admissions The School welcomes applications from students of all nationalities, faiths and backgrounds and we are proud to be a fully international community. Entry is preferable at ages 9+, 11+, 13+ and 16+, but is also possible at age 14+ for a few students. Applicants should register in the usual way and can take our entrance examination in their own country, either at the nearest British Council office, or at the premises of one of our overseas agents. Pupils whose first language is not English often need some additional support (sometimes this may be a condition of entry to Bedford School). The Academic Support Department provides specialised help in English for academic purposes.
Boarding There is a strong sense of community at Bedford. Each boarding house has its own character and is run like an extended family by a Housemaster and his wife. They are ably supported by a team comprising tutors, matrons and domestic staff who ensure that each boy’s welfare and health are safeguarded, as well as his academic progress. The boys have unrestricted access to Houseparents and this open-door policy encourages a strong relationship between parents, staff and pupils. The accommodation is excellent. The rooms are attractive, comfortable and thoughtfully planned and common areas are fully equipped to cater for a wide range of interests and recreational needs. Visits, tours and outings are regularly organised and the programme of activities includes debates, plays and concerts, go-carting and paintballing.
